**Update: 2020: This year 85 street girls were re-integrated with their families or local communities over the last few months, and now live in a safe home. The beneficiaries started a vocational training of their choice. This on-the-job training will be followed at local entreprises, and at completion the girls will take a nationally certified trade test (the NVTI). With the NVTI certificate, the girls will be able to earn an independent and sustainable income as for example seamstress, hairdresser or Kente weaver.

A future away from the streets
This action has as its goals to help the street girls of Kumasi from the streets, back to their families/local communities and to enable them to receive a vocational training of their choice. This training will be followed at local enterprises and is the most usual manner in which on the-job learning is used in Ghana. After completing the learning and working training the girl will take a nationally certified trade test (the NVTI). With an NVTI certificate the girls will be able to earn a self sufficient and durable income as, for example, seamstress, hairdresser, caterer or Kente weaver.

At the walk-in centre of our local partner Street Children Project in Ghana there is a large (daily!) stream of street girls that come asking for help. They desperately want to leave the streets behind and return to their family or local community, often in the north of Ghana. They realise that they are extremely vulnerable for the Covid-19 virus and are going hungry because they no longer have a source of income.
The girls ask for support to be able to make the trip back. SCP wants to help but does not wish to send them back empty-handed, since they know from experience that there is a large chance they will be back on the streets in half a year. By giving these girls the opportunity to follow vocational training in their own local community they develop a perspective for the future and can stay away from the streets.
SCP has extensive experience with this type of rehabilitation. There will be a careful intake and SCP will investigate the girls’ background and family in order to be sure that they will return to a safe place. This return will, of course, happen according to travel and quarantine protocols established by the (local) government. Moreover, the living situation and training progress will be monitored by our partner’s associates in order to be sure of a successful completion.
After completing the vocational training, the girls will take a nationally certified trade test (the NVTI). With the NVTI certificate, the girls will be able to earn an independent and sustainable income.

Her travel costs. With these funds, she can leave the streets and go back to her family or local community. With 25 euros you will give her a safe place to sleep and home environment.
Her training materials. These could be a sewing machine, loom, hairdresser equipment or cooking equipment, but also a worktable and chair. In short, with 50 euros you will hive her the materials she needs to follow her training.
Her training fee. With these funds the local entrepreneur will be compensated for the training the girl receives. With 100 euros, the training fee for the whole first year will be covered, giving this girl a future away from the street.
